It’s 48 Degrees, He’s in Shorts, and a Nor’easter Is on the Way

Sunshine and Snowpocalypse Share the Same Week

It was forty eight degrees in Babylon today and the sun was warm. The sky was clear, the driveway dry, and my husband was outside in shorts washing the car with complete confidence in his decision.

Snow still lines parts of our yard, and small purple petals push through the dirt.

Late February in New York does this every single year, especially here in Suffolk County. One warm day shifts your mood and conversations are about spring plans.

In the studio at West Door Yoga in Bay Shore, I notice the longer daylight immediately. We walk in while it's still light, and that changes the entire room feel. There is more movement, more energy and more students. I also hear that people are finally sleeping better.

“Suffolk County is under a Blizzard Warning from 6 a.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday, with snow increasing through the afternoon and into Monday evening. Forecast totals between 13 and 18 inches of snow, with winds over 40 mph and temperatures in the 20s.”

The Grocery Store Never Lies

After this morning’s class at West Door Yoga, I stopped at Stop & Shop on Union. The forecast was visible in the overcrowded parking lot, and in every cart there is milk, eggs, bread, frozen waffles, cookies, crackers, and ice cream. A few apples were among the essentials, and the Easter candy aisle stocked and crowded, because storm prep includes snacks.

How Late February Weather in Suffolk County Impacts Sleep and Motivation

Seasonal Changes Disrupt Routine, Sleep, and Motivation

I see this pattern in myself and in our community across Bay Shore, Babylon, West Babylon, and the surrounding Long Island neighborhoods.

A warm afternoon sparks big plans, and every night I comment on how the light stretches further into the evening. Yoga classes fill with conversations about new routines and renewed commitment to self-care.

When a nor’easter appears on the radar, that early spring momentum loses its footing. Seasonal transitions affect the nervous system more than we realize. The American Psychological Association confirms that changes in daylight exposure impact sleep, energy, and mood regulation during late winter and early spring.

February runs 28 days and feels like twice that.

This is why motivation feels unpredictable, cravings increase, and discipline feels harder than it did last week. Late February weather in Suffolk County always pulls this move.

This is exactly why we are intentional about the spaces created at West Door.

Built for Self Care, Overwhelm Relief, and Real Connection

Late winter requires structure and routine.

We talk about keeping our schedules steady when the seasons change, encourage valuing our sleep, choosing nutritious meals over salads, and relying on discipline instead of impulse.

At West Door, every offering reflects that approach.

Our yoga workshops provide tools for stress management and nervous system relief.

Women’s circles create space for conversation, support, and connection.

Reiki sessions support sleep, healing and restoration.

Sound immersion events create full body sensation and vibration.

Sunshine, Shorts, and Snowfall

Today, a forty eight degree afternoon is here, and the same day, a blizzard warning flashes across the news. Late February is hard, it is a grind, it is definitely draining, and just when you get a sniff of spring, Mother Nature says, "watch this", and drops another storm on the forecast.

Hold on! I promise, soon you will be washing your car in shorts too.
